Better Beginnings Offers Holiday Guide to Buying Toys

Better Beginnings is making your holiday toy shopping a bit easier this year with its Choose the Right Toys guide. The guide, located in the Family Resource Library, lists important tips for choosing the right toys for infants, toddlers, preschoolers and school-age children. The guide also gives guidance on selecting toys based on safety, durability, ease of use, educational value and more.

As a general rule of thumb: Less is more. The fewer functions a toy has, the more opportunity a child has to create and learn through play. Simple toys are easier for children to use, need less supervision and can last longer. Here are a few more tips you’ll find in the Better Beginnings guide:

  • Make safety a priority. Toys should be made of non-toxic and non-sharp materials. Toys that are age-appropriate and don’t have detachments also prevent unsafe situations from occurring.
  • Buy something that will last a while. Durable toys can withstand the wear and tear of continuous use over time.
  • Consider the entertainment value. Shop for toys that a child won’t get bored with easily. A toy with multiple uses can continue to entertain a child as they grow and develop.
  • Pick a toy that is educational. From developing social skills to teaching a child to use his or her imagination, selecting educational toys is beneficial for a child to learn through play.

These are just a few examples of the tips in the Better Beginnings Choose the Right Toys guide. Better Beginnings has also provided some examples of toys appropriate for children of all ages this holiday season. The Better Beginnings Choose the Right Toys guide can be shared with parents, grandparents and family friends to help them choose age-appropriate toys that support development and keep kids safe.
